Grateful patient Colin becomes Heli Hero

“I feel very blessed,” says Colin

When Colin was lying on the road after a terrible motorbike accident, you helped deliver the rescue helicopter to his side.

A few months ago, Colin was out motorcycle riding with a friend As they were winding their way through a remote hilly valley and over a bridge

…Colin hit a bump on the road.

He remembers being lifted off his seat before the crash, and finding himself on the other side of the road. ‘Slam dunked,’ he told us.

His friend, who was riding in front, immediately turned around – and a lady who was driving in a car also stopped. She dialed 111, and the rescue helicopter was dispatched.

Generous donations meant that your local rescue helicopter crew was fully equipped and ready – taking to the air within minutes.

Colin had broken both his legs, and was in immense pain. He had a couple of Panadol on him, but they didn’t help very much.

So it was with enormous relief that Colin heard the rescue helicopter landing nearby. An ambulance now on the scene was able to ferry Colin to the rescue helicopter with the expert assistance of your local rescue helicopter crew on hand to immediately get to work stabilising Colin before his rescue flight.

The Critical Care Flight Paramedic immediately began managing Colin’s incredible pain.

The CCFP said, we found Colin with both legs broken, in severe pain but conscious. Our priority was to stabilise him, manage his pain, and prepare for rapid transport to the nearest trauma centre in Wellington. Every second counts in situations like these; we worked quickly to ensure he received the best possible care. It's moments like these that we as crew realise the impact we can make to patients in their time of need.

Thank you to the wonderful supporters who made this expert medical care possible at the scene of an emergency, and all throughout the helicopter flight too!

Colin said “my experience in getting transported to Wellington Hospital by helicopter was something I’ll never forget. I was in a very bad way, and came close to losing both my legs.

“Between your awesome team and the surgeons, I feel very blessed to be in this position. Thank you team rescue - blessings on you all.”

Colin is so grateful for his rescue, he signed up to give a regular donation to his local rescue helicopter, saying, ‘You never know when you’ll need them.’

Thank you so much Colin, and to everyone who donates their rescue helicopter. We couldn’t do what we do, without you.
