Looking at the Waraich twins today you would never guess that very recently they were flying for their lives.
Aman Waraich was on an overnight stay near Mt Ruapehu with her husband and eldest son, when she went into early labour at just 28 weeks. Aman’s surprise contractions had the family making a dash for Taupo Hospital.
Once at the hospital, Aman was assessed by a midwife who established that not one, but both babies were in a breech position. Aman needed specialist help, fast.
Two rescue helicopters were dispatched on a twin mission to save Aman and her twins. A specialised NICU pediatric team from Waikato Hospital was flown to Taupo Hospital to help birth both babies. They were then flown to Waikato Hospital with the second helicopter hot on its tail carrying Aman who required urgent post-birth care.
“If there hadn’t been a prompt response by the teams, my children could have been in serious trouble or may not have even made it,” said Aman.
The twins remained in Waikato Hospital for over a month before being flown to Middlemore Hospital, closer to home, allowing the young family to be together again.
“The service provided by the rescue helicopters wasn’t just standard, it went above and beyond. We couldn’t imagine this life without the rescue teams,” said Aman speaking on behalf of her family.
