OUR DAUGHTER MAYA IS A MIRACLE WE WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL FOR.
During my pregnancy, I had to be admitted to hospital and induced. At 4am I woke up and felt something wasn’t right. I had a continuous contraction. The midwife noticed the baby’s heartbeat was up and down. I was rushed to the operating theatre.
At exactly 7.22am, my little girl came out with no life.
I couldn’t hear a cry and all my husband saw was a lifeless body. I closed my eyes and my husband was holding my hand. I could hear someone doing CPR. I prayed…and then a cry!!
And at that moment, I looked at my husband and I saw tears falling from his eyes.
They took me to recovery and they took our little girl Maya to the special infant unit. My husband was with her the whole time. He came to me and reassured me that our daughter was in good hands. With some humour he said: “She has bought me a ticket to ride on a helicopter.”
The paediatricians decided it was best for our daughter to be flown to Waikato Hospital to be cared for properly. In New Zealand, where healthcare is free, you are taken care of by the best and most competent professionals.
The crew of the Waikato Westpac rescue helicopter arrived and gave me such reassurance. I knew everything was going to be all right.
It was hard being separated from my husband and daughter, who both flew off to Hamilton. I never got the chance to hold my child or see her face without her mask. Finally, my family was reunited when I was transferred. The moment I saw Waikato Hospital, I just couldn’t stop crying.
That road was tough but now I look at my little girl and remember how she fought through every breath, every needle and every procedure. She is a miracle that we will always be very grateful for. (abridged)
