The phone call every parent dreads

It was the phone call every parent dreads, but playground accidents occur even on the safest turf.

“There are no words to describe how it felt,” began Kathy O’Callaghan, as she recalled the moment she took a phone call from her daughter’s school.

“I couldn’t bring myself to drive.  One of my colleagues drove me to Waikato Hospital; my husband drove to the school.”

Kathy had just received the news her daughter, Sarah, had fallen backwards off the monkey bars at school and banged her head.

Kathy arrived at Waikato Hospital and anxiously peered out of the Emergency Department’s window searching the sky for the familiar red and yellow of the rescue helicopter.

She recalled how tiny and vulnerable Sarah looked as they wheeled her in with a neck brace. “I knew as soon as I saw her, she was going to be okay.”

“I can’t believe how incredibly fortunate we were that our daughter was all right. Obviously the emergency crew were worried enough to call the helicopter, but to be able to get away with only a minor injury.”

“I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT.  THERE ARE NO WORDS A PARENT CAN USE TO DESCRIBE THE SENSE OF RELIEF.”

Sarah is back at school with no lasting effects from her accident.  A worst parent’s nightmare was alleviated thanks to your donation.
